“The Matter of the Beginner’s Guide to Becoming an Artist”

Plot: An artist is at loss with his creativity and artistry. In an obscure part of the city, he finds a suspicious looking signboard with the words “Beginner’s Guide to Becoming an Artist” written across, and inadvertently enrolls.
Meanwhile, on a Mediterranean island’s seashore in the pre common era, a group of men are ordered to construct a giant statue.
The theme of this play is “becoming an artist”. A highlight in this production is the 5 meters tall statue, built on stage as the play progresses. The theatre is likened to an artist’s studio, and the characters begin building the statue at the beginning of the performance, completing the structure at the end of the show. Characters include those such as the Artist (the protagonist), his Teacher of the “Beginner’s Guide to Becoming an Artist”, the Nude Model, the Patron, a group of craftsmen from ancient Greece, and university students of an arts college. Nearly 100 roles are performed by 24 actors, and the space is filled with various characters. This ensemble-comedy is a compilation of the company’s 20 years of establishment, marking it’s 30th commemomrative production.
Bull Docking Headlock
Bull Docking Headlock was established on April 10th, 2000, and presented the company’s first production in November 2000. 5 new members joined the company in 2016; Currently, there are 21 members residing. The age of the actors vary from 24 years old to 45 years old, thus giving a broad range of generation to the new assembly of Bull Docking Headlock.
Bull Docking Headlock is presided by Kouhei Kiyasu, who has written and directed almost all of the company’s productions. He is also an actor, and has taught playwriting at the Aster Plaza of the Hiroshima City Culture Foundation since 2013. He has written notable works for film and television, extending his range of works in various fields.
