“The Matter of the Beginner’s Guide to Becoming an Artist”
Written and Directed by Kouhei Kiyasu
Starring: Sachiko Nagai, Daiki Sano (from *pnish*), Jiyuu Arima

Plot: An artist is at loss with his creativity and artistry. In an obscure part of the city, he finds a suspicious looking signboard with the words “Beginner’s Guide to Becoming an Artist” written across, and inadvertently enrolls.
Meanwhile, on a Mediterranean island’s seashore in the pre common era, a group of men are ordered to construct a giant statue.
The theme of this play is “becoming an artist”. A highlight in this production is the 5 meters tall statue, built on stage as the play progresses. The theatre is likened to an artist’s studio, and the characters begin building the statue at the beginning of the performance, completing the structure at the end of the show. Characters include those such as the Artist (the protagonist), his Teacher of the “Beginner’s Guide to Becoming an Artist”, the Nude Model, the Patron, a group of craftsmen from ancient Greece, and university students of an arts college. Nearly 100 roles are performed by 24 actors, and the space is filled with various characters. This ensemble-comedy is a compilation of the company’s 20 years of establishment, marking it’s 30th commemomrative production.
