Outline

This was Koto Ensemble Toiro’s first concert hall performance. Under the concept of bringing a full-fledged performance undertaken by young professionals to a wide audience, the ensemble played a range of works from traditional koto pieces to new compositions being performed for the first time. Performers comprised six members of Koto Ensemble Toiro (Sakiko Endo, Chihiro Kakihara, Nanako Fujishige, Yumeko Machida, Kikue Yamawaki, and Asuka Wakisaka) as well as shakuhachi performer Eizan Yoshikoshi. The program consisted of six pieces: “Koto Shijuusoukyoku,” “Ochiba no Odori,” “ UNLEASH,” “Shin Aoyagi,” “Hyakkafu,” and “Passacaglia and Allegro for koto ensemble.”The new piece that was premiered, “Passacaglia and Allegro for koto ensemble,”was composed by Mariko Endo. As a new experiment for a koto concert, two types of concert program were created for distribution: one a regular concert program, and the other designed for koto novices with commentary by Koto Ensemble Toiro members themselves, with the aim of making the concert easy to understand even for people seeing koto for the first time.

Profile

Koto Ensemble Toiro
A koto performing ensemble formed by fellow students of the Ikuta school of koto music at Tokyo University of the Arts’ Department of Traditional Japanese Music. Hailing from all over Japan, ensemble members are active nationwide, principally in Tokyo, as performers of koto, 17-string koto, and sangen.
Taking as a point of appeal the individuality of each member’s “timbre” (“sound color” in Japanese) as musicians of different styles or “schools,” members gave themselves the name Toiro from the Japanese expression “ten people ten colors.”
The ensemble strives to bring traditional pieces of music preserved since ancient times to as many people today as possible, and challenges itself to modern compositions that uncover new possibilities for the koto.
