osmosism

  • Type of Grant Program : Single
  • Art Forms : Dance

Outline

In this project, Zui’s first, the collective created and presented a performance piece responding to the thinking of philosopher Emanuele Coccia. The title of the project is coined from the word “osmosis.” Going back and forth between language and the body, this was an attempt to explore a state in which physical expression and philosophy permeate each other.
Prior to the performance, there was a talk by philosopher Kazeto Shimonishi, as well as a lecture series incorporating workshops on physical expression by Zui. The second lecture featured as its guests Rui Matsuba and Tatsuro Usami, the translators of Coccia’s latest work, Metamorphoses.
The results were presented on November 26 and 27 at Institut français du Japon – Tokyo as part of the Nuit de la Philo 2022 event. The event featured a performance of the solo work “Boule in the Pool” by Yuki Kobayashi, while Saori Hala presented “Tender Confusion” with three young dancers.
Incorporating a production style by which both works coexisted in the same time and space created an experience in which the different contexts overlapped through the medium of the body. Yurika Kuremiya was the dramaturg in charge of the entire project.

Profile

Zui
Zui is a collective established in 2021 by choreographer/dancer Saori Hala and contemporary artist/performance artist, Yuki Kobayashi. They explore the meeting point of philosophy and art through a physical approach.
By occasionally giving the public access to the process of creating works, for example through lectures by guest researchers, the collective shares knowledge with audiences while at the same time it attempts to combine audiences interested in philosophy and performance and promote mutual exchange between the two fields.
