Outline

Under the theme“Shakuhachi in the Medieval Time,” this concert focused on the germination of shakuhachi culture.
Part 1 featured the“Koden-Sankyoku,”the three most cherished classical shakuhachi pieces of all: “So Mukaiji”(Old Kyoto Myoanji Repertoire), “Kyorei” (Kyoto Myoanji Repertoire), and “Koku” (Katsuya YOKOYAMA Repertoire), performed in order of ancient school and form.
Part 2 focused on the 14th century Zen monk Ikkyu-zenji, featuring a restored version of“Daimotsu、Korobite” on a replica Hitoyogiri Shakuhachi; “Murasaki Reiho”(Myoan Shinpo School), said to have been written by Ikkyu-zenji; and lastly a premiere performance of a Yu KUWABARA-commissioned piece, “Lingering Cloud and Clear Moon.”
In addition, calligrapher Kasetsu did the calligraphy and scenography for the venue, creating a Zen-like space which gave three-dimensional expression to the world of “FUKYO”(“poetic eccentricity”) that pervades “Shakuhachi in the Medieval Time.”
