Outline

Between 1963 and 1977, over 8,000 coal miners and more than 10,000 nurses emigrated from South Korea to the former West Germany under Korean national policy. This event explored transformations in their identities as well as those of the German Korean generations that followed. Together with works focusing on the identity and individuality of Asian people in Europe, the event featured a talk encompassing the experiences of the artist KIM Insook, who moved to and worked in Korea for 15 years, and the Tochigi-born artist UTAMURA Hanae, who has variously been based in the UK, Germany and America. The talk scrutinized Japan from inside and out, with the artists and audience thinking together about the sort of relationship Japan has with people of different backgrounds.
