Outline

On July 8, 2023, students who have studied at Tokyo University of the Arts (Tokyo Geidai) and achieved top scores in competitions both at home and overseas held a concert at Mitaka City Arts Center Concert Hall “Kaze.” The concert took a serious look at the small wind ensembles that are growing in number, centering around the club activities of junior high and high school students. All performers and concert staff were current Tokyo University of the Arts students.
Following its first performance in October 2022, in which the group delivered a powerful performance and showed it could hold its own against larger scale orchestras, the theme of this second performance was “Coloring of Wind Ensemble.” It focused on mixed ensembles of woodwind, brass, and percussion, as well as flexible orchestration capable of being changed around at will depending on the number of performers. There was also a performance using sheet music that featured in a special edition on the use of flexible ensemble sheet music in the August 2023 issue of wind instrument magazine, Band Journal.
Additionally, organizers commissioned and premiered a new piece for a small wind ensemble from a young composer currently studying at Tokyo University of the Arts. Some of the pieces performed will be streamed on the official YouTube channels of the sheet music publisher and the miniTua-wind ensemble.

This band is made up of volunteer students who have studied at Tokyo University of the Arts and achieved top scores in competitions both at home and overseas. The aim is to explore new forms of wind ensembles and take a serious look at small wind ensembles. The group bases its activities on the hope of helping junior high and high school students discover fresh appeal and possibilities in small wind ensembles, and to create an environment where music can be enjoyed regardless of the number of people involved. Following the first performance in October 2022, in which the group delivered a powerful performance and showed it could hold its own against larger scale orchestras, the 2nd Concert in July the following year focused on the premiere of new pieces and flexible orchestration.
