Outline

Tokyo Koenji Awaodori, which first began in 1957 as a festival to revitalize the shopping street in front of Koenji Station, has gradually expanded to become an event which 63 years later encompasses the whole Koenji region. The event is held with the aim of connecting people with each other and the community, encouraging local prosperity and contributing to cultural exchange with foreign countries and regions within Japan.

The 63rd Tokyo Koenji Awa-Odori
From 17:00 – 20:00 Saturday, August 24 / Sunday, August 25, Awaodori dance performances took place at a total of 8 performance zones around JR Koenji Station.
Participants: 164 ren (groups) totaling 11,000 dancers
Number of spectators: 450,000 on Saturday, 24/ 550,000 on Sunday, 25

Stage performance: Awaodori Performance in ZA-KOENJI Public Theatre
Both performances were given in two parts on Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25. These popular events offer something different from the street performances, making full use of lighting and sound.

Staff: Executive Committee for the event (includes members of local business associations and neighborhood associations), co-organizer (Suginami City Office) and volunteers (mainly students and working people, as well as collaborations with local elementary and junior high schools).

Tokyo Koenji Awa-Odori Promotional Board
Awaodori, which developed as a traditional performing art of Tokushima, is held as the local event Tokyo Koenji Awaodori every summer in Koenji, Suginami-ku. As well as linking Awaodori’s history to the future, the Promotional Board’s activities are designed to strengthen the roots of the dance as an example of regional culture. As well as widely canvassing for human resources amongst Awaodori aficionados in order to implement year-round performance and experience programs and promote the spread of Awaodori through performances in multiple regions in Japan and overseas, the organization hopes its activities will contribute to personal development and community-building.
