Outline

Since illness and old age cause changes in the body and hormonal balance, everyone can have moments when they are unable to act rationally, regardless of one’s intentions. However, in the face of the image of modern people as being rational at all times, unavoidably irrational thoughts, ideas and actions are dismissed under the theory of individual accountability, and people exposed to exclusion or criticism. In common with the works on display and three exhibition-related events, the exhibition “Plucking Fluffy Fur” aims to overhaul this modern image by looking at caregiving, and to alleviate potential suffering for everyone, not only those currently involved in caregiving. Works on display comprise: 1. “scapegoat” (2018), which won the Gunma Biennale for Young Artists Encouragement Award; and 2. “Escort Supporter for Polar Bear” (2022), which was awarded the runner-up prize at MIMOCA EYE. The main staff for the project comprise Hikaru Miyazaki [Office Mountain] as performer, with Kazumichi Komatsu (music), and Kazuki Sugiura (escort/assistant). The three exhibition-related events comprised talks and a round table discussion on “care for caregivers,” and “accessibility for people with mental and developmental disabilities.” The principal speakers are Min Nishihara, Miyuki Tanaka, and Shiori Nakajima [IIHENJI].
