These performances were related events for Composium 2023, hosted by Tokyo Opera City Cultural Foundation. In a composition competition called the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award, one judge takes on sole responsibility for the judging, and an annual music festival focuses on composers who have been judges for the competition. This time around, the two related concerts were themed around composer Jo Kondo and co-organized with Tokyo Opera City Cultural Foundation. The concerts of chamber music works and choral works took place on different days due to the fact that it is Kondo’s chamber music works that best exemplify his artistry, and his choral works show a development in compositional technique that is not seen in works of other genres. Tickets for the two concerts were more expensive than Tokyo Opera City Cultural Foundation’s orchestral concerts but fortunately they attracted large audiences. Another important theme of the concerts was to hand down the tradition of performing works by Jo Kondo to the next generation – organizers believe they achieved solid results with regard to this as well. In recognition of Kondo’s achievements, including the compositions featured in these concerts, he received the Suntory Music Award for 2023.
