Outline

This event at Eifuku-cho sonorium is the first concert hall performance for the double bass trio The Bass Collective comprising Kazuhiro Tanabe, Takashi Seo, and Masao Tajima, bassists who are principally active in different genres. The performance is being held to coincide with the release of the Collective’s first album “Mabataku-mori,” out on Shinya Fukumori and Masayasu Hanai’s “nagalu” record label. The program features ten or so pieces including “Echoes of Moonlight,” “White Owl,” and “Bougainvillea in an opposite dream,” compositions penned by each member of the trio and making full use of the tones produced by gut strings. Boasting a unique sound different from that of a typical ensemble, The Bass Collective provides stimulus for the double bass world in Japan and reaches out to the world with a sound connecting the origins of the double bass to the future.

Profile

Kazuhiro Tanabe
Tanabe is a double bass musician who works within genres such as classical music, Argentine Tango, and improvisation. After graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts, he discovered Tango and has performed with not only Tango musicians from Japan but also with many Argentinians, from young musicians to those from the golden age of Tango. Greatly influenced by his collaboration with top improvisational performer Tetsu Saitou, Tanabe has gone on to explore performance with an approach that leverages musical improvisation. He currently performs with bands including the Naoki Kita-Quartet and The Bass Collective, while working as a solo performer with the aim of expressing the inherent energy of music.
