Profile

SOHO21 (Composers’ Organization for Traditional Japanese Music)
In September 1996, Masataro Imafuji and Johin Kineya started a series of study meetings for the people with a creatie drive in various genre of Hogaku [Japanese traditional music], with the aim of creating new, living Hogaku wich stands on a foundation of tradition. In January 1997, 13 members of the study group launched Soho 21, and in March they established a literary division. They subsequently organized numerous research sessions and trial performances, and in May of 2000 they presented the first concert of their own works. Ever since, they have been holding about one concert a year and presenting their own works of new Hogaku compositions. Since 2010 they have also been presenting open lectures called “Sosaku-no-kimo [The Essence of Creation]” once or twice a year. In these lectures they analyze works of music from a creator’s perspective and offer advice about how to listen to them.
