Thinking about the form of the “family” going forward

Each passing day and month sees change in the relationship and living environment between the self and the family as well as in the challenges these engender. At the same time, the society we live in is changing hour by hour. In the midst of these changes, when we try to establish our own “family model,” what kind of relationship do we imagine is possible with the local community and what kind of house do we imagine we can live in?
Depending on timing, environment, and individual circumstances, there are various possibilities that ought to be available at the time in terms of ways to cohabit.

In this discussion, we welcome as our guests Yoshiro Shuto, who runs the shared accommodation/assisted living facility Happy Home Rokken in Shin-Nagata, Hyogo Prefecture as the result of issues regarding childcare and caregiving within his own family; and Takashi Iwasawa, who is involved in the creation of spaces where people can connect on a casual basis, and who even in private attempts to rework family relationships by leveraging the same perspective. We explore questions that arise as we face up to the changes and the environment surrounding family, and the possibilities for practices going forward.

By thinking of the family as a single cooperative body, we think we can gain a new perspective on how to face up to childcare and caregiving, things which for many of us will become (or already are) issues in our own lives, and on how to tackle life going forward.
We find out about our guests’ thinking and practices as they confront the unanswerable condition of “the family model,” and look at different approaches to the formation of communities and hubs in art projects.
