RAKUGO for Family: Special Edition

Genre:
  • Japanese Traditional Art ,
  • Kids / Youth

Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre “Theatre West” is transformed into a stylish RAKUGO stage!

Though featured in the line-up for TACT Festival 2021 in May, this event was unavoidably cancelled under the state of emergency; now it is being actualized as a special edition with the same program.
Over three days between Friday, August 6 and Sunday, August 8 we present a daytime program “Rakugo for Children,” a well-received event first held in August 2020. There will also be a rakugo lecture by a young rakugo artist with musical accompaniment, and skilled performances by Iromono (variety act) performers in arts such as Daikagura(acrobatics) and Kamikiri(traditional paper cutting). The program also offers frenetic rakugo turns by shinuchi (veteran rakugo preformers) as popular as they are skilled. Children and adults alike will be able to enjoy the diverse feast of entertainment on offer.
For the evening program on Friday, August 6, young shinuchis set to take up the baton of rakugo going forward will gather and elicit howls of laughter from the audience. In addition, we will be offering special talks just for the “RAKUGO” for Family event. Don’t miss it!
On the evening of Saturday, August 7, Niraku Hayashiya, famous as a monster aficionado in the entertainment world, takes up the challenge of a papercutting marathon featuring every monster from all 39 episodes of Ultraman! Audiences can enjoy two hours of “Ultra-immersion” together with Kyotaro Yanagiya and Kyonosuke Yanagiya, fellow fan of monsters and Ultraman.

We will hold this performance after taking measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Please be sure to check the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre’s precautions on the theater website and wear a mask when purchasing tickets/when visiting the theater. Please be advised that those who have a fever of 37.5℃ or higher or those who are not feeling well may be denied admission on the day of the performance.
