Published two hundred years or so ago, Grimms’ fairy tales are loved all over the world and have provided inspiration for many artists.
This event focuses on two of these unique tales that have a particular association with music: “Hansel and Gretel” and “Cinderella.”
Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre’s Tokyo Theatre DoJo group members will read Japanese versions of the stories as translated by Kyoko Matsuoka, known for the “Paddington Bear” books. In addition, the readings will be accompanied by live music performed mainly by students of Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre’s Geigeki Wind Orchestra Academy, who will be playing music based on“Hansel and Gretel” by Engelbert Humperdinck, who died a hundred years ago this year, and Camille Saint-Saëns, as well as Prokofiev’s melodic ballet score for “Cinderella.” Audiences will be drawn into a world of fairy tales through a wealth of charming music and words.
