Yatokko domei Workshop “Rejuvinating the YATO mountainside: Hands-on experience of logging

Genre:
  • Kids / Youth ,
  • Art Project ,
  • Workshop

Satoyama (undeveloped woodland near populated areas) is an environment that people have preserved since ancient times through regular modification and use. Apparently, local people once used to collect firewood on the mountainside around Ryoudenji Temple where the YATO project is based. In this workshop offering a close-up encounter with nature in a rural valley with guest lecturer and environmental education coordinator Hitoshi Koide, parents and children will get a hands-on experience of satoyama tree-thinning, an ingrained aspect of local life in olden times.
Children who participate in the workshops become Yatokko domei members!

*Yatokko domei is a scheme through which children encounter the history and culture of Tadao through participation in workshops given by artists and elderly people, with children and adults joining forces to develop new ways to play, and new opportunities to learn.
See our Facebook page to find out more about our activities.
