Painting your own yokai (supernatural creature) in ink
Why not try your hand at sumi-e painting using ink, a traditional Japanese art material?
The monochromatic painting style sumi-e is suitable for impromptu artistic expression and is a technique that allows a work to be completed in a short time.
For this open studio event, we want participants to join us in drawing yokai using sumi-e techniques. Yokai have appeared in Japanese since ancient times. These supernatural characters live alongside us in everyday life and actually feel very familiar. Let’s put pen to paper, imagining where yokai might be found in modern society. The objective is for participants to create and draw a yokai on shikishi paper using ink.
