Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Arts Council Tokyo (Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture) will hold Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony 2022, where the different schools of tea will come together to enjoy a wide variety of tea ceremonies at two venues for the first time in three years.
This year, the event will be held for total of four days at Hama-rikyu Gardens (Chuo City, Tokyo), the popular place as oasis in Tokyo on October 22nd (Sat.), 23rd (Sun.), and at Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum (Koganei City, Tokyo) where historical buildings in Tokyo are restored and exhibited on October 29th (Sat.), 30th (Sun.).
At both venues, there are Tea Ceremony (Indoor) and open air friendly Outdoor Tea Ceremony ‐ “Nodate”, and Traditional Culture Experience Program that helps guests to become familiar with Japanese traditional culture and crafts.
Also, at Hama-rikyu Gardens, there will be Outdoor Tea Ceremony in English that you can enjoy tea culture and how-to with English explanations, Outdoor Tea Ceremony by High School Students where students from tea ceremony clubs in Tokyo will offer tea ceremony. And at Edo-Tokyo Open air Architectural Museum, there will be Indoor Tea Ceremony in English.
The purpose of Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony is to disseminating Japanese traditional culture widely both domestically and internationally, and also to relaying “spirit of hospitality” to next generation. It has been held from 2008, and 13th this year, and is the casual and big tea ceremony where everyone can join. About 230,000 guests joined by 2019.
*This event will be held in compliance with prevention measures and for the spread of infections of Covid-19 and the event guidelines and venue usage rules issued by the national government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government．
