Outline

This project explores the future shape of “Asian bodies”, based on a quest toward the fusion of tradition and contemporary, through a collaborative work with Indonesian and Japanese artists that considers strong yet pliant culture of body movement in Indonesia.
Also working together with leading artists in the field of film, music, and dance, this project creates a new form of contemporary art, and which is the fourth work in the To Belong series, since 2012.
This ongoing performing arts project has been continuing upon collaboration and attempting experimental endeavor with new artists each year.

Profile

【Akiko Kitamura】
Choreographer, dancer, and associate professor at the Shinshu University Faculty of Arts
Founded “Leni-Basso” after entering Waseda University. In 1995, she went to study in Berlin on a scholarship awarded by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. In 2001, she won tremendous acclaim as a choreographer when she presented Face Mix, a solo work commissioned for the Bates Dance Festival (USA). Enact Oneself, a work commissioned for the American Dance Festival (USA), was chosen as Dance of the Year by North Carolina’s Independent Weekly in 2003. She is also involved in choreography and performance in other genres, including theater, cinema, and opera. After going solo in 2010, she won the Japan Dance Forum Award in 2013.
