Outline

This festival was launched for documentary creators to express what they cannot fully convey through existing media. A screen was set up in a neighborhood izakaya, with creators, performers and audience members all rubbing shoulders and generating thinking and action for the society of the future. In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic opened and exposed a Pandora’s Box of problems in Japanese society. Now in its 4th year, the Docu Memento event featured guests who embody the predicaments of life in Japan under coronavirus, providing a platform for their voices alongside the documentaries. Guests included Daisaku Sato of the Anti-Poverty Campaign, a movement which raises questions about an “uncaring society” that prioritizes self-help; rapper @POLO who watched closely from Kabukicho as that entertainment district was cast as the enemy; and Ali who, having lived in Japan for almost 30 years, has continuously been subject to restrictions on movement without being recognized as a refugee. The event gave a voice to people like these facing the challenges at the heart of Japanese society today. Audience numbers were limited at the venue, the event was streamed online.

Profile

DOCU MEMENTO Executive Committee
The Committee produces video works and runs events for the purpose of suggesting a new approach to the documentary and giving the documentary its place as a cultural force, as well as for the purpose of designing by itself the ideal environment for documentary creators. Docu Memento was established in 2017 and has been organizing annual festival in Shinagawa-ku in Tokyo. The festival explores new forms of expression linked to society, creating documentaries that offer an interactive experience different from television broadcasts or theaters. As well as expanding video works to internet, television and film, its documentaries also feature on the website of the UK’s Guardian newspaper.
