Russian composer Shostakovich’s songs contain a lot of politics and message, but they have many charms not only in their category but also as art songs. However, the opportunities for his works to be heard in Japan are biased towards some symphonies, and there are extremely few opportunities for his songs to be taken up. Due to the language barrier, Shostakovich’s Lieder works, which are not very familiar, are accompanied by lectures and subtitles, and four singers perform them according to the range required by the work, presenting a new dimension to his songs.
