This two-pronged initiative by video unit Shinichi Takashima + Shu Nakagawa comprised a video creation and research on video media. The outcome in terms of creation centered around the solo exhibition “No Experience Necessary,” and the book “Pictorial Experience w/o Picture” that resulted from research. The common theme of the overall project was “experiences that involve video but lack video content.” The new images presented in the solo exhibition focus on the mobility of the camera, not what is seen on the screen. The book does not include any images or diagrams; it has been created under a conceptualist approach of describing and considering “images that lack images,” and restricting them to verbal descriptions.
Photographer, born in Kochi Prefecture in 1980. Graduated from the department of Visual Design, Kobe Design University, in 2003. For two years from 2004, he attended the University of Fine Arts Münster, and in 2013 he completed a course at Yotsuya Art Studium. From 2015, he began working with artist Shinichi Takashima as the unit Shinichi Takashima + Shu Nakagawa. In the process of creating images as records, in recent years Nakagawa has become interested in the relationship between a device with a fixed scale like a camera, and the practical, committed gestures of the user trying to better work it, creating videos and engaging in writing through experiments in finding a causal connection between the habit of action and the physical mechanism of a device.
