  • Type of Grant Program : Single
  • Art Forms : Dance

Outline

Ne Na lab uses research to dismantle and reconstruct the various layers inherent in “food” such as taste, time, culture, physiology etc., generating performance in the process. In stage events where actual cooking time constitutes the performance time, performance takes place in parallel with cooking. At its work-in-progress performance in October 2022, while the group made braised pork belly it presented invisible time as performance, namely the dish’s culture and history, the growth time and lifespan of the main ingredient. In this performance, which took place in a café space in Ikegami in March 2023, two Ne Na lab members were joined by peer artists from diverse fields: Suzuka Iwakami (design), Jin Suzuki (juggling), Aran Hinokage (music), and Sakurako Saito (lighting). In the process of making hamburgers, a new style of performance was created on the theme of experiments in connecting the act of eating and dance, memories of the dining table, as well as family and care. After the performance, the group served food to the audience, creating an opportunity for audience members to experience firsthand the themes of the work, and generating dialogue through the sharing of a meal.
