SIGNAL+ Reich, Cage, Harrison

  • Organization : SIGNAL
  • Section : Artistic and creative activity in Tokyo
  • Type of Grant Program : Single
  • Art Forms : Music

Outline

Rather than savor the flamboyant techniques and pulsation of modern percussion music, SIGNAL uses the purity and lyricism of percussion instruments to reaffirm and reinterpret the appeal of classical pieces. For this event, five young percussionists tackle works demonstrating the results of the challenges and conflict experienced by the three featured American composers in their efforts to expand the possibilities of percussion instruments and music.

Profile

SIGNAL
Percussion trio formed by three members who enrolled in Tokyo University of the Arts in 2018. Their first performances took place in the three cities of Nagano, Aichi, and Tokyo.
The trio’s philosophy is to take on engaging works created through the allure of percussion instruments’ inherent primitivity, simplicity, and purity. Apart from percussion music, the trio members themselves are involved in a wide range of music-related activities including arranging and performing classical and film music and engaging in outreach programs at nursery schools and elementary schools.
