Buildings languishing quietly along city blocks, deserted shopping streets waiting in silence for shoppers to stroll by: these vacant locations, which continue to proliferate as crowds disperse and disappear, provide unique canvases and settings for invigorating paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations, and artwork of all kinds.
AKITEN 2014 is a community-based art project that uses vacancies around Hachioji Station as art galleries to fill the area with captivating artwork and generate higher levels foot traffic along struggling shopping streets. Over the course of the project, organizers plan to hold workshops, walking tours, and a selection of other events.
