Adachi ward is the largest region of the Tokyo 23 wards in terms of Filipino population. In the Philippines, 90% of the citizen is said to be Catholic. On Sundays, more than hundred people gather at the church in Umejima.
After the mass, the place is filled with songs, dances and all varieties of food, and merry voices of chattering fly through the air. But we hardly have a chance to know about their daily lives or what they are usually feeling while living in Japan.

MAKILALA means “to get to know” in Filipino language.
Why don’t you meet each and every one of them through our three programs of video installation, interactive workshop and Filipino-style party?

Know - Video installation: Their history, to be our story

A video installation created based on the interviews from Filipinos at Umeda Catholic Church. Behind their life stories they told, we will catch a glimpse of cultural differences between Japan and the Philippines, and the two big streams of history which made us encounter.
