The town is an art museum for everyone Kagawa Kobo Edition

Genre:
  • Visual Art / Media Art ,
  • Art Project ,
  • Exhibition / Screening

Koganei-based Kagawa Kobo is a day center enterprise focusing on daily living skills for people with disabilities. Unique and original artworks created by day center attendees are being put on show by fellow townspeople in a planned exhibition.

The exhibition will present characterful works of art made by Kagawa Kobo attendees living in Koganei who enjoy painting and being creative. These works might not be the pick of the art class, but neither are they so called art brut pieces normally associated with untaught or disabled artists.
The rich individuality of the day center attendees seems to shine through even more during gentle and careful interaction with them, when you see how they enjoy being creative and delight in having expressed themselves artistically.
Creative expression depends on the existence of both someone to do the creating, and someone to experience what is created. To revel in one’s own style of artistic expression; to have someone there not to “evaluate” one’s work but accept it as an important and unique expression of individuality; and then to have a forum to contemplate the rich and free expression of each person’s art without it being misrepresented or suppressed: this is the real pleasure of creative expression, a valuable endeavor that enriches our daily lives.

About Kagawa Kobo
This day center enterprise provides daily living assistance to people with autism and learning disabilities, as well as productive and creative activities, so that they can lead a healthy and independent life.
