In the art performance Memorial Rebirth by contemporary artist Shinji Ohmaki, countless soap bubbles from dozens of devices producing up to 10,000 bubbles per minute instantly transform familiar townscapes into landscapes of light.
Beginning in Senju on Iroha-dori in March 2012, the project has since been passed like a relay baton every year from location to location around Adachi-ku including elementary schools and parks. The project has continued to morph, connecting diverse community memories and people through such developments as the emergence of an original “Shabon Odori” festival dance, the creation of song lyrics, and the launch of evening sessions sending soap bubbles into the night sky.
