NAKACHO House, an activity hub for Art Access Adachi: Downtown Senju – Connecting through Sound Art, is a Japanese-style house in Senju Nakacho area of Adachi City.
It is an elegant pre-war house with lush green garden.
This house is a venue for various exhibitions, screening and project meetings.

In the art performance Memorial Rebirth by contemporary artist Shinji Ohmaki, countless soap bubbles from dozens of devices producing up to 10,000 bubbles per minute instantly transform familiar townscapes into landscapes of light. Beginning in Senju on Iroha-dori in March 2012, the project has since been passed like a relay baton every year from location to location around Adachi-ku including elementary schools and parks. The project has continued to morph, connecting diverse community memories and people through such developments as the emergence of an original “Shabon Odori” festival dance, the creation of song lyrics, and the launch of evening sessions sending soap bubbles into the night sky.

The Senju Pun-Filled Music Festival centering around musician Makoto Nomura is a project in which organizers create music together with local residents. Neighborhood people get together on an informal footing to swap puns, on the basis of which they go on to create music. Puns are a way of enjoying the power that comes from connecting different words; and pun-filled music is an effort to develop a new method of composition by harnessing this power.

This art project offers activities and events based on cultural and social interaction with non-Japanese residents in the neighborhood. As well as introducing the lifestyles and cultural backgrounds of newcomers in the community, the project explores the subsequent changes to various aspects of daily life in terms of adaptation, preservation and integration.

This recording project was implemented by Wataru Asada together with “town recorders” enlisted from the general public to report and record local sound and music. Through stories and memories of the ordinary towns people of Senju, events and episodes connected to the landscape and the fabric of human relationships unique to the Senju neighborhood, the music at the roots and the heart of Senju and more, the relationship between community and the individual is expressed, disseminated and archived through the medium of sound and music.

This is an artist-in-residence project open to young/emerging artists, and designed to strengthen communication with the places and people unique to Senju. This year, artist Mariko Tomomasa will work out of NAKACHO House.
