This production marks the first directorial stab at opera for Toshiki Okada, a high-profile director known for borderless, cross-genre work that sees him regularly invited to the theaters of Europe. Anticipation is mounting regarding the world view Okada will offer with his new take on this renowned Japanese operatic work by Ikuma Dan,20 years after that composer’s death.
Performers include Sara Koyabashi, appearing for the first time in the role of Tsu. Expectations are also high for Kobayashi’s artistic interpretation, based on her years of experience with the beautiful Japanese-language singing, ballet, and Nihon-buyo dance she has made her life’s work.
Takumi Yogi also makes his debut appearance in the role of “Yohyo,” arguably the central figure of this production. The role of “Unzu” is taken by Koji Terada, a popular young singer gifted with a naturally sublime voice, making his debut in this series. Playing “Sodo,” with many series appearances under his belt, is the “singing actor” Hirohisa Sannohe.
This production of “Yuzuru” is set to break new ground, featuring as it does an exceptional creator directing opera for the first time, and in-demand singers who know the series concept inside out. Expectations are high that this production of “Yuzuru” will shed new light on the work and leave its mark on Japanese opera performance history in a big way.
