Lecture: Using sign language: Sign language course for people engaged in art projects - Advanced class (Online course)

This is a sign language course to help people engaged in art project develop a perspective on response using the visual/physical language called sign language, and to improve the accessibility environment for art projects. Based on commonly exchanged on-site conversation during art projects, the aim of the course is for participants to practice conversing in sign language through role-playing and utilize it in practice. With guests who are deaf in real life, participants will learn through first-hand experience of the essentials for communication with deaf people.

Curriculum

Day 1: Saturday 16 October/Saturday 13 November

10:00 – 12:00 “Learning sign language expressions used in the field during art projects”
-Guidance and self-introduction
-Commonly exchanged on-site conversation during art projects, and points regarding sign language expression
(Example): Project information/guidance, reception, enquiries, public service announcements, etc.
-Where exactly is “just before” (“just in front of one’s hand” in Japanese) in art museum guidance?
-Expressions using “chotto” (variously meaning “a little,” “somewhat,” etc.)
12:00 – 13:00 Lunch break
13:00 – 15:00 Hands-on experience of real sign-language conversation
-What are the characteristics of conversation between deaf and hearing people?
-Understanding low context, high context, and deaf culture, and using them in art project management

Day 2: Saturday, October 23/Saturday, November 20

10:00 – 12:00 Hands-on experience of conversation with deaf guests (1)
-Hands-on experience of communication with deaf guests by assuming conversational scenarios
(Example) reception duties, ticket sales, customer support, etc.
-Review
12:00 – 13:00 Lunch break
13:00 – 15:00 Hands-on experience of conversation with deaf guests (2)

Eligibility

People at intermediate sign-language level (able to introduce themselves, exchange greetings, talk about their work), and who fall under any of the following
-Participants of Lecture “Encountering sign language: Sign language course for people engaged in art projects (Basic)” (2020 and 2021)
-People involved in organizing and running art projects who wish to improve their skills in sign language and other physical languages, and apply these skills to project management
-People considering improving accessibility in the art projects they are involved in by reinforcing their skills in explaining projects and communicating smoothly

For each schedule: 10,000 yen (including tax)

How to apply

*The deadline for applications has been extended.
*Please note that the application deadlines are different for Schedule A and B.

You can also select a method in the application form for submitting your video.

-Name, affiliation, age, contact details, etc.
-Reason for applying (about 500-600 characters)
-Self-introduction video in sign language (to verify intermediate level sign language)

How to submit your video
(1) Record the video by yourself and send the URL via an online file sharing service etc.
(2) Take part in the “Zoom Recording Session.” If you would like a different schedule or timeslot, please say so in the application form.
