(Space Room): verbalizing the “gaps” is an online radio program by KINO Meeting, a filmmaking project for and by “people with backgrounds overseas” and developed through walking around the city.
So far, KINO Meeting has produced works that focus on the “roots” of individuals through filmmaking workshops. These workshops have looked at stories of how people became aware of their roots for the first time after coming to a place with a different culture; at the awkwardness of having to talk about background because of one’s name or appearance; and at finding there isn’t a word that matches “roots” in one’s first language.
In discussions about filmmaking and its process, we realized there are numerous “gaps” in society that can’t be unequivocally defined as this or that.
This radio program features laidback conversations with KINO Meeting workshop participant and presenter with overseas roots, “Juni,” plus various guests. Bit by bit, we put into words the “gaps” that come to light through contemplating our backgrounds this way.
*This radio project is being implemented by KINO Meeting as a parallel program to its filmmaking workshops. You can also find an account of how the stream came to be and the intentions behind it on the KINO Meeting website (https://www.kino-meeting.com/reports/spaceroom/).
Available to stream once a month from August 2023.

*The program is conducted in Japanese.
