Making a long-awaited return to Japan after a two-year hiatus is Radu Stanca National Theatre in Romania, principle theater from the Sibiu International Theatre Festival, Europe’s third most important theater festival along with Edinburgh and Avignon.

Sophocles, the master of ancient Greek tragedy, wrote Oedipus the King the age of 75, and then about 15 years later at the age of 90 wrote Oedipus at Colonus. SilviuPurcărete’s bold stage adaptation “OIDIP” is a consolidation of these two works, which share the same themes but are written in different forms. The legendary character of Oedipus and his tragic fate has been vividly reconstructed through Purcărete’s powerful creativity, resurrecting a heart-rending tale that still rings true in the modern age.
Playing Oedipus is Constantin Chiriac, also artistic director for Radu Stanca National Theatre. Playing the two roles of Oedipus’s wife Jocasta (who is also his mother) and his eldest daughter Antigone is actress Ofelia Popii, who played the lead character in Lulu when the company last performed in Japan, stunning the audience with her possessed performance. In this dramatic and deftly-directed work, Purcărete vividly contrasts the hedonistic days Oedipus spends with his wife when he is king with the days of his later fall, when he realizes his crime and blinds himself.
