Practice: Encountering sign language (Online course (5 sessions in total))

This is an online course for learning the basics of communication in sign language, using the video-based program “Encountering Sign Language: sign language course for people engaged in art projects” as teaching material.
Instructors and participants will come together online to learn signed conversation, reviewing individual learning with the video teaching materials. The course will also touch on deaf culture, including differences in communication between deaf and hearing people.

*Participants are requested to prepare for study by watching the video material in advance before participating.
*For a limited time, we plan to share a video recording of the online course as video-based revision material for course participants only.
*This program will be conducted in Japanese

Course details

1. Learning basic expressions in sign language
Self-introduction, expressing time and numbers, degree (expressing extent/intensity)
Schedule: Thursday, September 1, 2022 20:00 – 21:30

2. Describing yourself
NMM (non-manual markers), interests and preferences, expressing “yes” and “no”
Schedule: Thursday, September 9, 2022 20:00 – 21:30

3. Describing work
Expressing occupations and responsibilities, assisting at reception/the ticket counter(buying/selling)
Schedule: Thursday, September 15, 2022 20:00 – 21:30

4. Learning Expressions with Classifiers (CL)
Various classifier expressions for communicating what you saw,
Schedule: Thursday, September 22, 2022 20:00 – 21:30

5. Understanding error-prone points
Difficult finger shapes, sign language and TPO (Time, Place, Occasion), differences in communication between deaf and hearing people
Schedule: Thursday, September 29, 2022 20:00 – 21:30

Participation fee

7,500 yen (5 sessions in total)

Capacity

Around 10 persons (on a first-come-first-served basis)

Eligibility

– People who want to practice sign language conversation using the sign language they learned in the video program
– People who want to understand and learn about deaf culture, and to be able to hold conversations in basic sign language
– People who want to leverage their knowledge of sign language and deaf culture in aspects of art project management such as reception and public relations.
