Sumida City Research Tour Vol.1: Sumida City through the Prism of Disaster Preparedness

Genre:
  • Art Project

The ultimate goal of BLOOMING EAST is that every space in the district should become a stage, where a multiplicity of sounds resonate and innumerable people gather. To create such places, this project aims to conduct research from diverse viewpoints to uncover unknown spaces and build networks of people and places, to ensure that these spaces are openly accessible to everyone.
Research is about to get underway in Sumida City, the first area targeted by BLOOMING EAST!
Dividing the city into themed areas, we will hold three tours between now and next January.
We want members of the BLOOMING EAST team to discover new charm in the neighborhoods, streets, and lanes of each area while actually walking around it, led by a guide with in-depth knowledge of the areas concerned.

In Vol.1, we will take a tour of the neighborhood to look at it from the perspective of disaster preparedness – a particularly important topic these days – led by a guide familiar with disaster preparedness in Sumida City. We will tour the southern area, which was burned to the ground in air raids during World War II; the northern area, which suffered no damage; and the Shirahige apartment complex, which is designed to serve as one of the first firebreaks to protect the designated evacuation zone. During this tour, we will learn about the differing consciousness of disaster preparedness in each area. We hope that those with an interest in the history of Sumida, those with an interest in local research, and those with an interest in disaster preparedness will come and join us to research this district.
